    P. Madon, a reforestation expert sent by the French government (experienced in Algeria), is posted to Cyprus as head of the forest department; Ohnefalsch-Richter later calls him his 'chief'.

    Ohnefalsch-Richter becomes 'Superintendent of Works for Replanting', the island's 'second forest officer' under Madon, after asking in a letter of 25 Jan 1881 to go 'as assistant to the chief of the Forest Department' so as to travel the island; sent to the mouth of the Pedieos to select plantation land.

    The Cyprus Exploration Fund's Salamis report credits Ohnefalsch-Richter with the accidental discovery of two marble capitals under the sand near the Forest Guard's house, 'while he was employed in the Forest Department', which gave a clue to one of the sites dug.
