Anna Cannavò

fl. 2002–2020

Lyon historian of ancient Cyprus who wrote on the historiography of Cypriot archaeology and, with Stephan Schmid, on the inscriptions in Paul Schröder's letters.

Biography

Anna Cannavò has written on how the history of ancient Cyprus came to be written. Her doctoral thesis, "Histoire de Chypre à l'époque archaïque: analyse des sources textuelles", is dated 2011 at the Université Lumière Lyon-211. In 2012 she published, in Cahiers du Centre d'Études Chypriotes 42, a study of Cyprus in nineteenth- and twentieth-century historical writing, "Découverte de l'antique, construction du passé"4,7. A 2015 chapter, "Towards a history of the histories of Cyprus", appeared in the proceedings of the tenth Postgraduate Cypriot Archaeology Conference8. A reviewer of an Athens colloquium volume points readers to her account as the more circumspect and documented one6.

Her work on the kingdoms includes a 2015 article on the Teucrids of Cyprus in Isocrates, which the 2019 Salamis conference volume quotes on the setting of Isocrates' praise of Evagoras3,9. In 2018 she and Ludovic Thély edited Les royaumes de Chypre à l'épreuve de l'histoire, BCH Supplément 60, published by the École française d'Athènes10.

In 2020, with Stephan G. Schmid, she published in Cahiers du Centre d'Études Chypriotes 50 the inscriptions from the Lang and Cesnola collections as they appear in the letters of Paul Schröder. Schröder studied both collections in 1870 and 1873, and his letters to Justus Olshausen record Phoenician and syllabic inscriptions from Robert Hamilton Lang's work at Idalion and Drymou and from Luigi Palma di Cesnola's at Kition-Batsalos and Golgoi1. Her affiliation in that article is HiSoMA, at the Maison de l'Orient et de la Méditerranée Jean-Pouilloux in Lyon1.
