    Published Die Phönizische Sprache (Halle, 1869), whose Inschriften aus Cypern section (pp. 227-232 as printed in Cobham's list) deals with the Cypriot Phoenician inscriptions.

    From Cyprus he wrote to his mentor Justus Olshausen (Privy Councillor for Prussian universities in the Ministry of Education) recommending that the Berlin Museums excavate on their own account under an archaeologist who could also act as consul of the North German Confederation; Schmid says the suggestion was also made to Chancellor Bismarck.

    Cesnola asked Samuel Birch to look into having 'the German Schröder' write the Phoenician-inscriptions chapter of his book (planned while writing, from 1874; Birch was to arrange George Smith for the inscriptions and Pierides for the Greek ones).
