Copper mining: Skouriotissa and Mavrovouni

32 field photographs, 47 object photographs · 1927–31

Sites: Skouriotissa, Mavrovouni

This series holds 79 photographs of ancient copper mining in Cyprus, chiefly at Skouriotissa and Mavrovouni, with a fragment of a bronze ingot from Mathiati. They belong to no excavation of the expedition. The field photographs (32) show ancient workings: crib-timbered shafts, open stopes with pillars, an untimbered gallery, timber supports in an underground working at Mavrovouni, and the slag heaps on Foukassa Hill at Skouriotissa, where the captions separate "Pre-Roman" and "Roman" slag. Two show Erik Sjöqvist at a mine with other people and donkeys. The object photographs (47) show what came out of the old workings: timber sets, wedges, ladders and a hand windlass, rope, fragments of reed baskets, an iron moil and hoe, stone tools, clay pipe, amphora sherds from water jars, a crystal of selenite, and wood with metallic copper deposited in it. There are also drawings of timbering and a map of the mining centres.

The expedition's third volume printed J. L. Bruce's "Antiquities in the Mines of Cyprus" as its fifth appendix. Soli, where the expedition worked from 1927, lies on the edge of the island's richest copper district; see the Soli and Vouni series, and the page on J. L. Bruce.
