Taylor and Edith Belcher's colour slides

61 photographs · 1950–70

Sites: Nea Paphos, Salamis, Kourion, Vouni, Nea Paphos-Tombs of the Kings, Aphendrika

Sixty-one colour slides from four albums of the Taylor and Edith Belcher Collection at CVAR, given to the Centre by Anthony and Taylor Belcher III. Taylor G. Belcher was the United States Consul General in Nicosia in the late 1950s; CVAR publishes extracts from his diaries and reports and from the diaries of his wife Edith. CVAR dates most of the slides between 1950 and 1970; two are dated 1958 and one 1967, and many carry a short label written on the mount, such as "Dig Larnaca" or "Salamis Sunset".

The slides follow the couple's visits to the island's ancient sites: the columns and theatre of Salamis, the sanctuary of Apollo and the theatre at Kourion, the Tombs of the Kings and the floor mosaics of Nea Paphos and the roofing put up over them, the basilica of Chrysopolitissa, the museum at Kouklia, Vouni and the theatre of Soli, the ruined churches of Aphendrika and the apse mosaic of the Panayia Angeloktisti at Kiti. Two slides show a visit to the excavations at Kition, with Vassos Karageorghis among the visitors.
