James R. Carpenter

fl. 1970–1981 · United States

Kent State University archaeologist who directed four seasons of excavation at the Bronze Age settlement and cemetery of Episkopi-Phaneromeni, Limassol, from 1975 to 1978.

Biography

James R. Carpenter of Kent State University directed the American excavations at Episkopi-Phaneromeni near Limassol, a Bronze Age settlement and cemetery that Saul Weinberg had probed in 1955. In 1972 the Bulletin de correspondance hellénique described him as professor of archaeology at Kent State, working with Giroux of the Université Laval on a survey of Bronze Age sites around Soloi3. Davis lists him at Kalokhorio-Khalandrikos for Kent State in 1973-748.

The first Phaneromeni season, in 1975, was sponsored by Kent State and the National Geographic Society and found a late Middle Cypriot settlement and Early to Middle Cypriot tombs1,4. In 1976 the dig produced a Late Cypriot IA settlement and two Middle Cypriot II-III tombs; the Bulletin names Kent State and the National Endowment for the Humanities as sponsors that year5. The third season, in 1977, worked Sector A and reached the northern, eastern and southern limits of the settlement6. In 1978 the team, drawn from the United States, Britain and Australia, opened Sector J beside the Limassol-Paphos road, where the Middle Cypriot tombs had been robbed, and Stuart Swiny and Kent State students surveyed the surrounding region; the sponsors were Kent State, the Endowment and the Cleveland Foundation, and the Bulletin calls Carpenter associate professor7. Davis lists Carpenter and Swiny together as excavators for 1975 to 19788. A study season followed in 19797.

Carpenter published "Excavations at Phaneromeni: 1975-1978" in 1981, in a volume edited by Biers and Soren10.
