Ioannis Pavlou Bontitsianos (J. P. Vondiziano)

1839–1895 · Ottoman

Consular agent, Limassol. Lived at Limassol. Gave to Paul Schroeder; worked with Max Ohnefalsch-Richter.

Life and work

  1. 16 August 1869
Signed as 'I. P. Vontitsianos' a short letter to the Athenian review Pandora (issue of 1 Dec 1869) giving three Cypriot syllabic inscriptions with drawings, 'found recently in the ruins of Palaepaphos'. Masson shows they are the Dhrymou group (Masson 1987: ICS 85-87), first owned by R. H. Lang; the Palaepaphos provenance may come from Vondiziano or from an unknown intermediary who sent him the drawings.

  2. 1873
Sent a photograph of the colossal Bes of Amathus (found 1873) to Dr Paul Schröder in Constantinople; Curtius (Archäologische Zeitung 30-31, 1874, p. 145) names 'der deutsche Consularagent, Herr P. Vontiziano in Limassol, ein eifriger Freund des Alterthums'.

  3. March 1876
Host at Limassol of Justus Siegismund (the German epigraphist), who was killed in a fall at a tomb near Hagios Tychonas (Amathus) on 3 Mar 1876; Boutkowski's account says Siegismund meant to return that evening to Limassol 'chez le consul Allemand M. Bondiziano', who came to the spot with the guide and the town's schoolmasters and pupils and confirmed the death.

  4. 1885
Copied the syllabic inscriptions of the Agia Moni church (ICS 90-91, found 1885) and gave the copies to Dr Deecke for publication (Hogarth: 'M. Vondiziano of Limassol'; Masson 1987 identifies him as I. P. Vondiziano and cites Deecke in Bezzenberger's Beiträge 11, 1886, 315-316).

Cesnola's letter of 11.1.1886 to his lawyer Menardos asks what 'Vondiziano and the two diggers have sworn to' for Richter and Dümmler (Kourion treasure dispute). Which Vondiziano is not stated: this Limassol man (Kourion lies in his district; Menardos worked at Limassol) or Andreas, Cesnola's former conductor of excavations, whom Dümmler questioned at Athienou.
