Archaeologist who excavated at Kalavasos-Kokkinoyia and Pamboules and re-examined the earlier digs at Pamboules and Tenta, on the Neolithic and Chalcolithic of Cyprus.

Biography

Joanne T. Clarke dug at Kalavasos-Kokkinoyia and then re-read the records of earlier digs at Kalavasos-Pamboules and Kalavasos-Tenta. Kiely describes her as a native of Australia whose work took her to the Levant, Cyprus and the UK, with doctoral study at Edinburgh under Edgar J. Peltenburg; he also names her as co-director, with Louise Steel, of the Gaza Research Project1.

Her publications on Cyprus include "The Ceramic Neolithic Period in Northern Cyprus" (1992)2 and, with Ian A. Todd, the field survey of Kalavasos-Pamboules, published in the Report of the Department of Antiquities, Cyprus for 19933. In 2001 she argued in Levant that regional variation in painted decoration in Ceramic Neolithic Cyprus expressed group cohesion4. She excavated at Kalavasos-Kokkinoyia and Kalavasos-Pamboules in 2002 and 2003, reported in 20045. With P. Croft and C. McCartney she also re-studied the 1940s excavations at Pamboules, which Porphyrios Dikaios had dug6. She edited On the Margins of Southwest Asia: Cyprus during the 6th to 4th Millennia BC (Oxbow, 2007)6.

With Alexander Wasse she published "Time out of joint" in Levant (2020), a critical re-assessment of the excavation record at Kalavasos-Tenta. They argued that Tenta was occupied continuously from the mid ninth to the mid seventh millennium cal. BC7. Kiely places her at the University of East Anglia in 20171.

With A. Wasse, a critical re-evaluation of Kalavasos-Tenta (Levant 51, 26-53; published online 2020): argues Tenta was occupied almost continuously from the mid 9th to mid 7th millennium cal BC and that its communal buildings reflect PPNA-derived 'archaism'.
