Gerald Cadogan

fl. 1973–2019 · United Kingdom

Director of the Maroni-Vournes excavations in the Larnaca district from 1981-82, first for the University of Cincinnati and later jointly with the British School at Athens.

Biography

Gerald Cadogan began digging at Maroni-Vournes, in the Larnaca district, in 1981, on a site that had last been tested in 1897 by a British Museum mission looking for Late Bronze Age tombs1,4,8. The Archaeological Reports date his start to 1981, the French Chronique reports a first campaign in 1982, and Thomas Kiely describes a trial season in 1981 followed by work from 19821,4,7. The excavation was sponsored by the University of Cincinnati, and its aim was the occupation sequence at Maroni around the time the first Aegean settlers arrived4. A second season ran from September to November 1983 and found, on bedrock, the earliest floor with a hearth, dated to Late Cypriot IA; Cadogan's preliminary report, "Maroni I", appeared in the Report of the Department of Antiquities for 19835,13.

After Cadogan moved from Cincinnati to England, the British School at Athens became a co-sponsor. Kiely dates the joint enterprise from 1985, and the Chronique shows both institutions behind the 1986 season6,7. Work continued until 1993, with study seasons afterwards3,7. The excavators found buildings of Late Cypriot I and II, the large Late Cypriot IIC Ashlar Building and an Archaic shrine built in the ruins of an older structure3. In 1990 Sturt W. Manning began a survey of the lower Maroni valley in association with Cadogan's Maroni Valley Project3. Cadogan published four Cypro-Minoan inscriptions from Vournes with J. Driessen and S. Ferrara11. The catalogued material is in the Larnaca Archaeological Museum, and the A. G. Leventis Foundation supported the work and, from 2005 to 2009, the publication of the results8.

In the preface to the catalogue of the Pierides Collection at Larnaca, Vassos Karageorghis thanked Cadogan and Nicholas Stanley-Price for reading the final stages of the text9. Cadogan was co-editor, with Maria Iacovou, Katerina Kopaka and James Whitley, of Parallel Lives: Ancient Island Societies in Crete and Cyprus (2012)17. A festschrift, The Great Islands: Studies of Crete and Cyprus presented to Gerald Cadogan, was published in 201512.
