Elizabeth Sarah Goring

fl. 1980–1995 · United Kingdom

Curator at the National Museums of Scotland who wrote the 1983 London thesis on Late Cypriot goldwork and curated the 1988 Edinburgh exhibition "Aphrodite's Island".

Biography

Elizabeth Sarah Goring wrote the doctoral thesis on Late Cypriot goldwork, submitted at Bedford College, University of London, in 1983 under J. N. Coldstream1. The thesis rests on objects she handled herself, in the British Museum, the Ashmolean, the Fitzwilliam, the Royal Scottish Museum, the Birmingham and Liverpool museums, the Louvre and the Cyprus and Larnaca Museums, and she wrote that it is not a complete corpus because gold had been dispersed worldwide without provenance1. It opens with a history of nineteenth-century digging in Cyprus and the division of finds. Vassos Karageorghis had encouraged the work, and in summer 1980 she examined the gold from the 1979 Palaepaphos-Skales excavations under the microscope and wrote the appendix "Techniques of the Palaepaphos-Skales jewellery" for his report on the cemetery1,4.

By 1988 she was Curator of Mediterranean Archaeology at the National Museums of Scotland3. That year she curated "Aphrodite's Island: Art and Archaeology of Ancient Cyprus" at the Royal Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh, from 14 April to 4 September, drawing on collections in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and St Andrews and on loans from the Cyprus Department of Antiquities2,3. The catalogue, A Mischievous Pastime: Digging in Cyprus in the Nineteenth Century, treats the Scots who worked in Cyprus; the reviewer David Hunt discussed it in the Classical Review2,3. Her dates of birth and death are not recorded.
