Filippo Giudice

fl. 1988–2018 · Italy

Catania professor who directed the Italian excavations at Toumballos, "Garrison's Camp", in north-west Nea Paphos from July 1988.

Biography

Filippo Giudice of the University of Catania directed the Italian mission at the site known as Garrison's Camp, or Toumballos, in the north-west of Nea Paphos, which began in July 1988 under an agreement between the Republic of Cyprus and Italy1,4. The Scuola Archeologica Italiana di Atene took part in the work1. Herscher's survey prints his name as "Guidice"2.

The area held a rock-cut chamber complex that the honorary inspector Georgios Eliades had almost completely emptied in the 1950s4. The Catania team found a subterranean Hellenistic and Roman sanctuary of interconnecting rock-cut chambers, a street and buildings in the so-called Christians' quarter, and a small Byzantine basilica of the 12th or 13th century1. Later descriptions add a 72 m polygonal dromos, an Early Christian church of the end of the 4th century AD, two lined pools and a possible xystos4. Herscher reports a geometric mosaic floor in the entrance and an Early Christian building with a crypt, read as a martyrium2.

Giudice published the campaigns in the Report of the Department of Antiquities, Cyprus: the 1988 season in 1992, with E. Maugeri, S. P. Pafumi, D. Malfitana and M. Sgarlata, and the 1990 season in 19945,6. A chapter of 2016 covers the excavations from 1988 to 20137. Early titles call the site the sanctuary of Apollo; a later article by Elvia Giudice, Giada Giudice and Leonardo Fuduli calls it the "so-called" sanctuary and says the cults, the Dioskouroi among them, remain difficult to identify4.
