Olivier Callot

fl. 1964–2022 · France

French architect and numismatist of the Lyon missions to Salamis and Kition who worked on the temple of Zeus and published the coins of both sites.

Biography

Olivier Callot was the architect of the Lyon mission's temple of Zeus at Salamis and later the numismatist of its finds and those of Kition-Bamboula. At Salamis, where the Lyon mission worked from 1964 to 1974, he was a member of the team that dug the temple of Zeus with Gilbert Argoud, Bruno Helly and Anne-Marie Larribeau1,2. His own account of the temple describes the podium, ramp and cella, a gilded bronze male head found in 1970 and read as Claudius, and bronze drapery fragments found in 19732. The team published "Le temple de Zeus à Salamine" in the Report of the Department of Antiquities, Cyprus for 1975, and Argoud, Callot and Helly published the Byzantine residence called the Huilerie in Salamine de Chypre XI1.

In May and June 1981 he was the architect of Marguerite Yon's Kition-Bamboula campaign, which worked on the Archaic and Classical sanctuaries of Herakles-Melqart3. With J.-F. Salles he wrote "Un collecteur à Kition" (1981), a study of a water collector at the site, and with Yon he published new finds from the west necropolis at Kition in 19871,10. In 2002 he published an architectural analysis of the western part of Temple 1 at Kition, as a possible holy-of-holies niche11.

Callot also published the coins of both sites. He wrote the coin appendix to Vassos Karageorghis's Excavations at Kition VI (2003) and Les monnaies (Salamine de Chypre XVI, 2004), the main source for the Byzantine coins from Salamis; D. M. Metcalf counts 810 identifiable coins of 491 or later among the Lyon finds7,10. In 2015 he argued that the Late Bronze Age monumental remains at Kouklia (Palaipaphos) were those of a roofed temple, not an open-air temenos12. His study of the coins of Kition-Bamboula appeared in 2016, where he is named as co-author, with Sabine Fourrier and Yon, of the forthcoming Kition-Bamboula VIII10,13.
