- 22 March 1872Cesnola wrote to Layard from Larnaca that no Assyrian or cuneiform inscription had been found in Cyprus since the Berlin (Sargon) stele of 1846 [sic].

- 21 September 1872Cesnola wrote again from London that he intended to buy the vegetable garden where the Sargon stele was found and dig it thoroughly.
- 1878–1879Zichy family recollection (undocumented): Count Ferenc Zichy obtained most of his Cypriot antiquities on a joint visit to Cyprus with Layard, then British ambassador at Constantinople.
