Life and work

  1. 1876
Layard wrote to Disraeli about Cesnola's gold and silver finds and sarcophagus and said he would speak to the British Museum trustees about a purchase; "Mr. Newton" told Disraeli that Cesnola was already in touch with the Museum. Marangou says 'apparently' pressure from Lord Beaconsfield, who showed particular interest, led the trustees in early March 1876 to ask George Smith to visit Cyprus with a view to buying the collection.
