Nea Paphos: MA-P, Maloutena and Agora in the Paphos Urban Plan (Warsaw and Kraków)
2019–today · Nea Paphos
Also known as MA-P project
MA-P, the joint Warsaw and Kraków project at Nea Paphos from 2019: Hellenistic street levels and metalworking debris at Maloutena, and a new stylobate fragment in the Agora.
The project
At Maloutena, in the western part of Nea Paphos, the 2025 campaign of MA-P reached the level of a stone-paved street and recorded a shallow basin, used as a settling tank, linked to well S.2331. Ewdoksia Papuci-Władyka of the PCMA at the University of Warsaw directs the expedition, which has run since 2019 jointly with the Jagiellonian University1. It works at Maloutena, west of Fanari Hill, and in the Agora, in trench T.II in the northern part of the East Portico1.
The 2025 season began with a spring study period in April and May, when a small specialist team worked on the material. The main campaign followed in September, with around 30 people1. Paweł Lech of the PCMA, Warsaw, leads the western-city project, and Łukasz Miszk of the Jagiellonian University supervised the Agora work1.
At Maloutena the Hellenistic finds included numerous crucibles for melting metal, made from the lower parts of amphorae, and a stamped Rhodian amphora handle of the eponym Aristombrotidas, which the report dates to around 117 BC1. In trench T.II the excavators found a fragment of a previously unknown stylobate with the lower parts of two fluted column drums1. The finds study of 2025 identified around 350 elements of architectural decoration and conserved 71 coins, mostly bronze with one silver; it also recorded gold foil and the handle of a bronze situla1.
