Kato Paphos: Department of Antiquities rescue tombs of 1999–2000
1999–2000 · Nea Paphos
Department of Antiquities rescue excavations of Hellenistic and early Roman rock-cut tombs in Kato Paphos and at Vassiliko, in December 1999 and 2000.
The project
In December 1999 the Department of Antiquities excavated five Hellenistic rock-cut tombs near Ammoi and two on Agios Antonios street, found during road works at Kato Paphos (Nea Paphos)1. The Ammoi tombs held undecorated pottery, two bronze mirrors, a bronze earring and gold leaf from a diadem; one Agios Antonios tomb held two burials with a coin on each chest, and the other a female burial in a wooden sarcophagus1. In 2000 nine tombs were excavated at Vassiliko, and a painted rock-cut tomb with a central atrium and loculi at Kosti Palama Square, where a cremation burial lay in a cooking pot in a niche of the north wall1. The tombs are summarised in Louise Steel's survey of 1997 to 2002 in Archaeological Reports 501.
