Nea Paphos: Luigi Palma di Cesnola's trial digs
1868–1869 · Nea Paphos
Also known as Cesnola at Neo-Paphos
Luigi Palma di Cesnola's experimental borings of 1868 and 1869 and a week of slight diggings at Nea Paphos, where he reports temple remains, a coin of Vespasian and Roman lamps.
The project
Luigi Palma di Cesnola says that in 1868 he sent diggers from Larnaca under a foreman to make experimental borings among the ruins of Nea Paphos, and that they were stoned and forced to flee1. In 1869 a second party went with his dragoman Besbes; it was attacked, abandoned its tools and fled1. During a week at the site he made slight diggings in two places, and reports a silver coin of Vespasian and Roman lamps1. At one spot three granite columns stood and he found the bases of nine more in place; at the other he found column shafts, triglyph blocks and volutes, which he thought probably also temple remains1. He also had rubbish removed from a large rock-cut tomb at Palæo-Castro and suggested that it was the family tomb of a great personage, possibly a king of Paphos1. He describes the work in Cyprus: Its Ancient Cities, Tombs, and Temples (1878)1.
