Łukasz Miszk
fl. 2011–2020 · Poland
Jagiellonian University archaeologist of the Paphos Agora Project who wrote the stratigraphy chapter of its first volume and reviewed Kyriakos Nicolaou's 1968-78 Agora and Odeon excavations.
Biography
Łukasz Miszk is a member of the Jagiellonian University team at the Agora of Nea Paphos, and the author of the chapter in the project's first volume that argues the 1968 to 1978 excavations there need re-evaluation. The Paphos Agora Project, headed by Ewdoksia Papuci-Władyka, excavated the Agora from 2011 to 2014 and began a non-invasive survey of the wider Archaeological Park in 20151. His listed work begins in 2014; from 2016 he co-wrote papers on architectural features with Karolina Rosińska-Balik and on photogrammetry with Wojciech Ostrowski and others, and he was a co-author of the first preliminary report, published in 2018 in the Report of the Department of Antiquities, Cyprus, New Series 11,5.
In Paphos Agora Project (PAP) I (2020) he wrote chapter 2.2, an overview of research on the Agora, and chapter 3 on its stratigraphy and architecture, and co-wrote further chapters and an appendix on the urban layout1,2,3. Plate captions credit him with the drawings of the chronological stratification of Trenches I to III1.
In chapter 2.2 he reviews the work of Kyriakos Nicolaou, who dug around the Odeon on the east side of the Fanari hill from 1968 to 1978. Miszk calls the publications "far from satisfactory": the reports were brief and copied from one another, the documentation and finds were unavailable to researchers, and the chronology rested on upper layers and limited trial trenching. He concludes that "the research carried out in 1968-1978 needs re-evaluation". He lists how Nicolaou's date for the Odeon changed, from the 3rd century CE in 1968-69 to Augustan in 1970-75, the first half of the 2nd century in 1976-78 and Trajanic in 1979-801,2.
Life and work
- 2011–2014The Paphos Agora Project (Jagiellonian University), headed by E. Papuci-Władyka, excavated the Agora of Nea Paphos from 2011 to 2014 (East Portico, centre of the square, south entrance, south-east corner); the licence was granted in 2010 by the Department of Antiquities director Maria Hadjicosti. Miszk is credited in the PAP I volume with the stratigraphy and architecture of the Agora; the date he joined was not found.
Nea PaphosPapuci-Władyka 2020
- 2014Co-author of a short piece on an outdoor exhibition of photographs from the Kraków excavations (Opiekuńcze ramiona Afrodyty, Alma Mater 168).
- 2015From 2015 the PAP team began a non-invasive survey of the whole area of the ancient city (the Archaeological Park); Miszk co-authored a 2015 paper integrating 3D and TLS data using GIS for the PAP database.
Nea PaphosPapuci-Władyka 2020
- 2016–2018Co-authored overview papers on architectural features (with Rosińska-Balik, 2016), close-range and UAV photogrammetry (with Ostrowski, Hanus, Winiarska, 2016 and 2018), and the first PAP preliminary report in RDAC NS 1 (with Papuci-Władyka and Machowski, 2018).
Nea PaphosPapuci-Władyka 2020
- 2020In PAP I (2020) wrote chapter 2.2, 'The Agora of Nea Paphos - Overview of Research' (p. 111), and chapter 3, 'Stratigraphy and Architecture of the Agora' (p. 127); co-wrote chapters 2.1 and 20 with Papuci-Władyka, chapter 18 (UAV, photogrammetry and remote sensing) with Ostrowski, Winiarska and Hanus, and the appendix on urban layout with Ostrowski and Papuci-Władyka.
Nea PaphosPapuci-Władyka 2020
- 2020In chapter 2.2 re-assessed K. Nicolaou's 1968-1978 Agora and Odeon excavations: the reports were brief and mutually copied (ARDAC, AJA, a little BCH); the documentation and materials are not available to researchers; chronology was drawn from upper layers and limited trial trenching; the 1968-1978 research 'needs re-evaluation'. Nicolaou's dating of the Odeon backfill shifted from Late Hellenistic (1968) through Augustan and 1st-half-2nd-century to Trajanic.
