Nea Paphos: the Hungarian expedition's granite column survey
2003 · Nea Paphos
Also known as Vörös's column survey
A 2003 survey by the Hungarian expedition under Győző Vörös, which recorded 27 granite columns at Nea Paphos missing from earlier British research.
The project
In 2003 the Hungarian expedition at Nea Paphos, headed by Győző Vörös, recorded 27 granite columns that earlier British research had not recorded1. Vörös divided the columns into a group of 710 cm, then at the Agia Kyriaki-Chrysopolitissa basilica, and a group of 470 cm, estimated at probably more than 50 columns1. He argued that they came from one quarry in the Troad and belonged to one building, a Hellenistic one associated with a temple on Fanari Hill, and not to a Roman agora as commonly assumed1. These interpretations are Vörös's, as set out in Łukasz Miszk's 2020 overview of research on the agora of Nea Paphos1.
