Series·Swedish Cyprus Expedition

Kyrenia, the northern range and Bellapais

90 field photographs · 1927–31

Sites: Kyrenia, Karavas, Peristerona, Kantara

This series holds 90 photographs of Kyrenia and the north coast, kept with the expedition's archive and not tied to any excavation. They show the harbour and the town, roads and walls in the Kyrenia range, the abbey of Bellapais, and the Byzantine chapel of the monastery of St Chrysostomos; single photographs show Karavas, Kantara and Peristerona. The expedition's Volvo appears on a mountain road.

Not all of them are expedition field photographs. About sixteen are printed views captioned in capitals with a quotation from an older writer on Cyprus, among them views of the monastery of Machairas, and six prints are marked with the name Vessberg. Dates are not recorded for single photographs; the museum gives the span of the expedition's years.

The expedition worked on this coast from its first season, when Erik Sjöqvist began excavating the tombs at Vrysi tou Barba, Lapithos, in September 1927. For its excavations here see the Lapithos fieldwork series, the photographs of swimming at Kyrenia in the people and expedition life series, and James Stewart's finds from Vounous below Bellapais in the other excavations series.
