Series·Swedish Cyprus Expedition

Nicosia and the Cyprus Museum

98 field photographs · 1927–31

Sites: Ledra, Agros, Klirou

This series holds 98 photographs of Nicosia between 1927 and 1931, where the expedition kept its house and stores. They show streets, buildings, bridges and the river, a car among people in town, a winter with snow, Gladstone Road under snow, portraits and children. The expedition's headquarters at 11 Gladstone Road, called the Swedish Institute in the captions, appears here and more fully in the people and expedition life series. A few photographs show the Cyprus Museum's grounds and pottery in its collection. A handful are of places outside the town, such as Pedoulas, Agros and Klirou, filed by the museum with Nicosia.

The Cyprus Museum was the expedition's partner in Nicosia. Einar Gjerstad first studied there in 1923, on finds excavated by its curator Menelaos Markides, and in the autumn of 1930 the expedition's finds were divided between the museum and Sweden. Its staff served as the expedition's foremen: Jorkos Anastasiou, Lazaros Nikolaou, Loizos and Michalis Nikolaou were attendants of the museum.
