Marcello Cerruti

fl. 1844–1847 · Italy

Sardinian consul at Larnaca from 1844 to 1847 who dug at Dali with Mas Latrie, found sixty medieval tomb inscriptions and gave Cypriot antiquities to the Turin museum in 1847.

Biography

Marcello Cerruti, of Corsican origin, was Sardinian consul at Larnaca from 1844 to 18471. Ludwig Ross counted him and Jacob Mattei among his "dear and obliging friends" there, and Cerruti showed him a manuscript chronicle and a map of the interior on which he was working3. Ross called him an eager archaeological amateur, and Kerr's report of 1845 says Cerruti had found sixty tomb inscriptions of the Crusader and Lusignan period1.

When Louis de Mas Latrie stayed in Cyprus in 1845 and 1846, he and Cerruti had small excavations made at Dali, and Mas Latrie gave the finds to the Cabinet des Médailles in Paris2. Mas Latrie also used the manuscript itinerary of "MM. Marcel et Louis Cerruti, 1844-1847"2. Merrillees reports that Cerruti is said to have dug around Amathus and Paphos, and that he had an unenviable reputation for breaking inscribed stones in the hope of finding treasure inside; he names no document for the latter1. Cerruti and Mattei also wrote to Ross about the stele of Sargon found at Larnaca1.

In March 1847 Cerruti gave a series of Cypriot antiquities to the museum of antiquities in Turin1.
