    Jacob Mattei (b. Larnaca 1784) was appointed Prussian consul "evidently on the death of his father" Giovanni Maria (called Marino) Mattei, 1742-1810, consul of Ragusa and Prussia.

    Ludwig Ross visited Cyprus 16 February to 26 March 1845; the Prussian consul received him and lent a country house near Salamis. Merrillees identifies the consul as Jacob Mattei.

    The stele of Sargon II was found at Kition in late autumn 1845. Jacob Mattei and the Sardinian consul Marcello Cerruti supplied Ross with the facts; the stele passed through Marino Mattei and was bought for Berlin (Merrillees: by the Prussian consul for 7,000 francs; Berlin records give 3,000 florins).
