Idalion: Mas Latrie and Cerruti's small digs at Dali
1845–1846 · Idalion
Small excavations at Dali arranged by Louis de Mas Latrie and Marcello Cerruti during his 1845–1846 stay in Cyprus, with objects that went to the Cabinet des Antiques in Paris.
The project
Several objects preserved in Paris are said to come from small excavations at Dali, which Louis de Mas Latrie took to be ancient Idalion1. He arranged them with Marcello Cerruti, the Sardinian consul, during a stay in Cyprus from late October 1845 until spring 1846, with help from the French consuls Dagobert Fourcade and Théodore Goëpp1,2. No excavation area is recorded1. An account written after the visit described the collection he returned as heads or complete statuettes of the Cypriot Venus, found at Dali1. Mas Latrie gave a collection of Cypriot antiquities to the Cabinet des Antiques of the Bibliothèque royale in 1846; its donation list includes a stone Venus statue (Fossati no. 761) and two small Venus heads (nos. 692 and 690); which of the listed objects came from the Dali digs is not recorded1.
