Consul / diplomat

Charles Frédéric Théodore Goëpp

1815–1893 · France

French diplomat. Consul at Larnaca. Worked with Louis de Mas Latrie.

Life and work

  1. 1845–1846
Helped the historian Louis de Mas Latrie during his 1845-46 stay in Cyprus (with Fourcade, 'showed the island' to him, per Marangou); Masson 1992 says he 'received' the first French scientific missionary.

  2. 1846
Merrillees notes 'a hint' that Goëpp may have been involved in the Sargon II stele affair at Larnaca: Mas Latrie's letter of 18 April 1846 says the 'consul' had already had the monument put under shelter and awaited orders about its acquisition. The consul is not named in the quoted passage; Merrillees offers this as a hint only.
