Idalion: Colonna-Ceccaldi's digs at Dali
1867 · Idalion
Tiburce Colonna-Ceccaldi's work at Dali in 1867, which produced objects without archaeological context and, reportedly, a life-size limestone statue bought by the Louvre in 1869.
The project
A life-size limestone statue of a female figure, now in the Louvre as N III 3278, was reportedly found at Dali in 1867 by Tiburce Colonna-Ceccaldi, and the Louvre bought it in 18691. Schmid and Summa place its findspot on the eastern acropolis of Idalion, at Moutti tou Arvili1. In 1867 peasants working for him at Dali are reported to have produced a rich harvest of objects without archaeological context2. A letter of 7 January 1868 to the Trustees of the British Museum describes the limestone objects in his collection as found at Dali, mainly on two bare hills 500 to 600 metres southeast of the village, at depths of one metre, or two at most3. Ulbrich gives 1866 to 1869 as the span of his exploring and excavating at Idalion4.
