Idalion: Ohnefalsch-Richter's survey and trial digs on Moutti tou Arvili, 1887
1887 · Idalion
Max Ohnefalsch-Richter's survey and trial digging of August 1887 at Moutti tou Arvili, Idalion, which produced a site plan and tested the fortification line and temple enclosure at spot 8.
The project
In August 1887 Max Ohnefalsch-Richter surveyed and tried the ground at Moutti tou Arvili, Idalion, at the place he called spot 81. Edward Carletti drew the plan of Idalion on his instructions2. Ohnefalsch-Richter says that he made the trigonometrical survey of sanctuary 8 alone after Carletti returned to Nicosia, and that he employed Abraami Charalambos and a man named Michaili to try the hill and its boundaries, so as to verify the fortification line and the temple enclosure for an archaeological and topographical study of Idalion1. In a letter to the High Commissioner Ohnefalsch-Richter said that plans, maps, photographs and a long manuscript had been with the Berlin Museum authorities since 18871.
