Idalion: Captain Sicard's dig, 1857
1857 · Idalion
Captain Sicard's digging in the region of Dali in February 1857, whose objects reached the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon in 1869.
The project
Objects in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon are reputed to have been found in 1857 in the region of Dali, Idalion1,2. According to the museum's inventory, transcribed by Yon, Captain Sicard had members of his crew dig a mound of sherds and debris in February 1857, brought back a considerable quantity of objects, and the objects bore visible traces of light-red colouring1. Sicard gave them to Pierre Martin-Rey, who donated them to the museum, which recorded them on 19 May 18691. Yon identifies three of them: a coarse limestone statuette (X 722–1), a veiled stone head (X 722–3) and a terracotta figurine of a goddess with raised arms (X 722–4); she notes that the identification of the inventory's fourth item is uncertain1.
