Idalion: the French consul's digs with Cesare Mattei
1862 · Idalion
Small-scale excavations at Dali continued after de Vogüé's 1862 visit by a French consul, Péretié and Cesare Mattei, as reported by Cesnola.
The project
Cesnola reports that after de Vogüé's explorations in Cyprus in 1862, small-scale excavations at Dali were continued by the French consul, Napoléon Antoine Aimé Péretié and Cesare Mattei, and he calls their success indifferent1. He gives no dates, excavation areas, finds or account of what became of them1. He does not name the consul. Tatton-Brown distinguishes Aimé Péretié, the antiquarian, from his son Alfred, who later served as French consul in Larnaca, and states that Aimé's consular career was in Lebanon, in Beirut from 1844 until his death in 18822.
