Series·Swedish Cyprus Expedition

Troodos, Machairas and village life

104 field photographs · 1927–31

Sites: Klirou, Athienou (Roman honorific inscription)

This series holds 104 photographs from the Troodos mountains and their villages. A large group (31) was taken at Machairas, where the expedition had a house: its terrace and porch with deckchairs, its rooms, and the mountains around it. Another group records village crafts at Klirou: potters shaping vessels with a wooden knife in the courtyard of a farmstead, new pots set out to dry, and a rope-maker twisting net cord. These carry numbers with the prefix JL, the farmsteads are identified by letter, and the museum credits the photographs to John Lindros, the architect who did the expedition's drawing and photographic recording.

The rest are landscapes, roads and villages in the Troodos and Machairas area. About a third are printed views, captioned in capitals with a quotation from an older writer on Cyprus: weaving, winnowing, a gourd cutter, a mountain stream, the summit of Troodos. One photograph shows a Roman honorific inscription from Athienou.

For the members' life at Machairas see the people and expedition life series; for more village crafts, with the JL photographs from Lazania, see Cyprus 1927–1931: other places and views.
