Series·Swedish Cyprus Expedition

Famagusta, Salamis and the east

56 field photographs · 1927–31

Sites: Salamis, Achna-Southeast, Famagusta-harbour tombs

This series holds 56 photographs of Famagusta and the ruins of Salamis to the north. At Salamis they show walls, stairways and masonry among trees, with no excavation of the expedition's own. At Famagusta they show the walled town and its ruins, the cathedral of St Nicholas (later a mosque, here also called Ayia Sophia), the citadel, the harbour, a train arriving loaded with boxes, and produce being loaded at the quay. Some are prints from the Antiquities Department, Cyprus, two of them marked "R.A.F. Official", and a few are printed views with quotations from older writers.

The expedition worked on several sites in the Famagusta district: the tombs of Enkomi and Stylli in 1930, Ayios Iakovos, about 22 km north of Famagusta, in 1929, and Milia, 18 km to the north-west, in 1928. Their photographs are in those series. See also the site page for Enkomi.
