Stylli

33 field photographs, 73 object photographs · 1930

Site: Stylli

This series holds 106 photographs from the necropolis at Stylli, a village on the Mesaoria plain north-west of Famagusta, where Erik Sjöqvist excavated in the autumn of 1930. The tombs lie east of the village along the road to Enkomi. The expedition excavated 17 tombs, all of the dromos type, with chambers of irregular shape that had clearly been reused. They range from Cypro-Geometric IIIA to Cypro-Archaic IIA, about 900 to 500 BC. Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden, a supporter of the expedition, took part in the excavation. The tombs were published in the second volume of the expedition's report.

The 33 field photographs show the site and its tombs during excavation, with pots and stones in place; three show the Crown Prince, one of them digging. The 73 object photographs show the finds by S. number (S.4.4 is Tomb 4, object 4), largely Bichrome III and IV pottery, with drawings of terracotta lamps and group photographs of tomb contents.

See the excavation page and the tomb pages, for example Tomb 17. Three more photographs of Stylli finds are filed in the Enkomi series.
