Series·Swedish Cyprus Expedition

Paphos, Kourion and the south coast

62 field photographs · 1927–31

Sites: Kourion, Limassol, Palaepaphos, Kolossi, Hala Sultan Tekke, Tamassos

This series holds 62 photographs of the south and west of Cyprus: Kourion, Limassol, Kolossi, Palaepaphos and the coast, and one of the mosque at Hala Sultan Tekke near Larnaca. Many come from one folder in the museum's record titled "Paphos, Pano-Paphos Kurion, Kalavaso"; the record names the folder, not the exact place, so their captions give all four names. They show buildings, ruins, villages, boats and the shore.

Several do not belong to the expedition's own fieldwork. A photograph of the temple of Aphrodite at Palaepaphos is dated 1934, after the expedition had left the island. Some are printed views of Limassol with quotations from older writers, and one is a copy photograph from a 1914 report by Menelaos Markides, captioned with Ayioi Omologitades, Politiko and Limassol.

The expedition's excavation on this coast was at Amathus, east of Limassol, where Alfred Westholm excavated 26 tombs in April and May 1930; see the Amathus fieldwork series and Westholm's tomb inventories DII:2f and DII:2g. See also the site pages for Palaepaphos and Tamassos.
