Several workers dig and carry earth in a wide excavated area, with wheelbarrows and a cylindrical stone block in the foreground. Curved earth tiers curve around the lower right, and low standing walls and rubble line the upper right. A white tent stands at the left, and fields and low hills stretch across the background under a pale sky.

Curving tiers of earth and stone rise on the right, a large block stands in the middle, and rubble walls run along the upper edge. A wide view over an excavation in which many workers with picks, shovels and baskets dig trenches and the sloping soil. Two wheelbarrows stand on the flat floor of the curved orchestra area, and a few spoil heaps lie nearby. Stone walls run along the upper right, a white tent stands at the left edge, and a flat plain with scattered trees and distant hills stretches behind.
