Jean des Gagniers

fl. 1960–1989 · Canada

Headed the Soloi excavations from 1964 and was the intermediary through whom Laval University bought Cypriot antiquities in the 1960s, including from the Nicosia dealer P. Kolokassides.

Biography

In 1964 a joint Franco-Canadian expedition of the University of Quebec, headed by Jean des Gagniers, began exploratory research at Soloi1. In 1974 the spring campaign of the Laval mission ran from late March to May, with L. Kahil, R. Ginouvès and V. Tran Tam Tinh leading the acropolis, lower town and basilica sections. The autumn campaign was prevented by the events of 1974, and des Gagniers wrote the report2. Soloi I appeared in 1984, written with V. Tran Tam Tinh5.

A review of Marie Fortin's catalogue of Laval's Cypriot collection says that its 400-odd objects, mostly Cypro-Archaic pottery, were bought in the 1960s from the Department of Antiquities and from the Nicosia dealer P. Kolokassides, "through the offices of Jean Des Gagniers". The pieces from Kolokassides were exported with the Department's permission. About forty more pieces went to the Musée de l'Amérique Française in 1966, also through him3. Petros Kolokasides is probably the dealer meant.

With Vassos Karageorghis he co-wrote the corpus of Iron Age figured pottery (1974, with a supplement in 1979) and the volume on Red and Black Polished ware (1976)7,8. Åström's review of the 1976 volume says its material came mainly from the Cyprus Museum, the collection of Chr. Hadjiprodromou of Famagusta and the Pierides Foundation at Larnaca4.
