Lilly Kahil

1926–2002 · France, Switzerland

Archaeologist and iconographer who dug at Soloi with the Université Laval mission from 1964 to 1974, working on the necropolis, the bronze-head house and the acropolis.

Biography

Lilly Kahil worked for ten seasons at Soloi on the north coast of Cyprus, from 1964 until the events of 1974, with the Université Laval expedition directed by Jean des Gagniers3,6. Kyriakos Nicolaou's news report for 1973 lists her with René Ginouvès and V. Tran Tam Tinh among the professors assisting des Gagniers5. The four wrote the summary report "Trois campagnes de fouilles à Soloi" in the Report of the Department of Antiquities, Cyprus for 19674.

She worked on the necropolis, where tombs were dug from 1964 to 1970, among them eight Cypro-Geometric and Archaic tombs in 1970, some with ninth-century pottery, and she prepared their publication in 1971 and 19721,2,6. She also finished clearing the house in which a life-size bronze head had been found, and planned a study of it for Antike Kunst2,4. In 1974 she led the acropolis sector, where des Gagniers reports that trial pits in 1973 had shown a Hellenistic palace in two phases, with figurines, stucco and a bronze spearhead3,4. The Oxford Encyclopedia of Archaeology in the Near East says she found walls of a fourth-century BCE building that may have been a royal palace6.

Elsewhere on the island she contributed a note on a mosaic at Kouklia in 19711. The Wikidata and German authority records for an archaeologist of that name give 1926 to 2002 and a marriage to Ginouvès8.
