Georges Daux
1899–1988 · France
French epigrapher, Director of the Ecole francaise d'Athenes and editor of the Bulletin de correspondance hellenique, which printed Karageorghis's annual Chronique on Cyprus from 1958/59 to 1988/89.
Biography
Georges Daux edited the Bulletin de correspondance hellénique when it printed Vassos Karageorghis's yearly Chronique of Cypriot excavations. He was born at Bastia on 21 September 1899 and died in Paris on 23 December 19886. Hector Catling calls him a former Director of the Ecole francaise d'Athenes and editor of the Bulletin de correspondance hellenique4.
In 1951, as Director of the French School, he invited Jean Bérard on a mission to Athens and Crete, which Bérard cited in June of that year to explain a delay to the planned soundings at Nea Paphos. In May 1952 Daux and his wife were in Cyprus, staying at the Ledra Palace, and sent greetings to Bérard through Porphyrios Dikaios1.
In 1958 Karageorghis, then Assistant Curator at Nicosia, noticed that all the annual reports on Cypriot archaeology were in English and proposed a French Chronique des fouilles et découvertes archéologiques à Chypre to Daux. Catling says instead that Daux invited Karageorghis to write it. It appeared in the Bulletin every year to 1988/89, written by Karageorghis and translated by his wife Jacqueline Karageorghis, with Daux receiving the text each March2,3,4. Karageorghis records that Daux read the whole 1964 Chronique and looked after its presentation5. The Etudes chypriotes series began under Daux's direction with Olivier Masson's Les inscriptions chypriotes syllabiques (1961); Karageorghis's Nouveaux documents followed in 19652,3.

- 1958With Vassos Karageorghis, decided that the Bulletin de correspondance hellenique would carry a yearly 'Chronique des fouilles et decouvertes archeologiques a Chypre', at Karageorghis's suggestion because all annual reports on Cypriot archaeology were then in English. The BCH printed it every year from 1958/59 to 1988/89 (the two sources give 1958-1988 and 1959-1989).
- 1961Under his direction the Ecole francaise launched the Etudes chypriotes monograph series; vol. 1 was O. Masson, Les inscriptions chypriotes syllabiques (1961). Karageorghis's own first French book (1965, Nouveaux documents pour l'etude du Bronze Recent a Chypre) appeared in the series.
- 1965Reviewed the whole text of Karageorghis's Chronique for 1964 (BCH 89) and took care of its presentation, with Masson reviewing epigraphy.
