French scholar, active 1935–1955.
Life and work
- 1935Published a review article, "L'archéologie suédoise à Chypre", on the first volume(s) of the Swedish Cyprus Expedition's Finds and Results (Gjerstad, Lindros, Sjöqvist, Westholm), 1927-1931 excavations.
- 1946–1950After Jean Bérard presented his first communication on Enkomi to the Académie (1946), Picard, described as a major figure of Greek archaeology, reacted with reserve: the question was clearly posed and time would resolve it. Later quoted as approving Bérard's use of Enkomi stratigraphy to revise the chronology of Troy's fall.
- 1950sIn a letter to Bérard (written at Christmas, year not printed on the page read) Picard promised to back Bérard's Paphos project before the excavation commission of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, advised him to speak to Daux, and remarked that Cl. Schaeffer was well provided with funds. Bérard received Foreign Ministry funding in 1952.
