Kourion: Dümmler and Ohnefalsch-Richter's examination of Cesnola's treasure site
1885 · Kourion
In 1885 Ferdinand Dümmler and Max Ohnefalsch-Richter examined, before witnesses, the spot at Kourion where Cesnola said he found the 'Curium Treasure', and reported undisturbed earth at shallow depth.
The project
At Kourion in 1885, Ferdinand Dümmler and Max Ohnefalsch-Richter examined the spot where Cesnola said he found the 'Curium Treasure'1. They examined the spot before numerous witnesses and found undisturbed earth at a small depth1.
Myres and Ohnefalsch-Richter state that the result justified an absolute denial of Cesnola's story, and add that he is known to have excavated numerous rich tombs on the site1. Schmid argues that Dümmler probably obtained his permit on behalf of the German Institute2. The examination is recorded in the 1899 Catalogue of the Cyprus Museum, where the two men appear as Dr. Dümmler and O-R.1.
