Kourion: Alessandro Palma di Cesnola's digging
1876–1877 · Kourion
Alessandro Palma di Cesnola's digging at Kourion in 1876 and August 1877, where he reported gold and silver ornaments before local opposition ended his stay.
The project
Alessandro (Alexander) Palma di Cesnola began digging on his own account with the financial support of Edwin H. Lawrence1. In October or November 1876 he sent a party of five men to Kurium, which returned with few finds1. In August 1877 he dug at Kourion with ten men, in the same spot where, he says, a predecessor had found a treasure, and reported gold and silver fibulae, rings, ear-rings and a necklace. After about a fortnight he left for Larnaka, he says because of adverse talk in the village coffee-houses, leaving one man, who returned a month later with silver and bronze objects and twenty or more earrings1. Veronica Tatton-Brown places the episode within opposition from villagers and an official complaint from the Ottoman administration to the Italian Government2. Cesnola says the relics he brought from Cyprus were shown at Lawrence's house in Holland Park, London1.
