Kourion: Swiny's reconnaissance north of Episkopi Bay
1978 · Kourion
Stuart Swiny's summer 1978 surface reconnaissance of Bronze Age sites north of Episkopi Bay, which located two cemetery areas and a settlement north of Sotira.
The project
In summer 1978 Stuart Swiny led a regional surface reconnaissance of Bronze Age sites from the Kouris River westward toward Evdhimou and Anoyira, as part of the Kent State University project at Episkopi-Phaneromeni1,2. It identified five previously unrecorded sites and studied 13 others already known to varying degrees1. North of Sotira the team tried to relocate a tomb excavated by P. Dikaios and did not succeed; the correct area was identified as Cemetery A, a second cemetery on facing slopes to the east was named Cemetery B, and a walking survey located settlement debris over about 2 ha2. Eilis Monahan describes the survey as not systematic2. The 1978 annual report states that the nine sites studied had been occupied at the start of the Middle Cypriot and were abandoned toward the end of that period, except Erimi-Kafkalla, which continued into the Late Cypriot3.
