Kythrea

52 field photographs, 36 object photographs · 1930

Sites: Kythrea, Lapithos, Petra tou Limniti

This series holds 88 photographs from the Chalcolithic settlement at Kythrea, north-east of Nicosia, which Alfred Westholm excavated in the spring of 1930. In the winter of 1930 stone tools found near the village were reported to the expedition. The site lies about 200 m south of Kephalovryso, on a slope cut by streams. Westholm cleared five circular huts built of rubble; four had a base for a central post carrying the roof. The huts had been emptied before they were abandoned, except Hut IV B, which burned with its contents: flint tools, grinders, mortars and a small jug. The settlement was published in the first volume of the expedition's report.

The 52 field photographs show the excavated stone foundations, people on the site, and the hillside and cave above the site. The 36 object photographs show the stone and flint finds by Ky. number. The published plates set the Kythrea finds beside those from the Neolithic settlement at Lapithos, and six photographs here include Lapithos objects; two show finds from Petra tou Limniti.

Westholm's notes for Kythrea are in the notebook DII:2b. See the excavation page and the Petra tou Limniti series.
