Kountoura Trachonia

22 field photographs, 54 object photographs · 1928–29

Sites: Kountoura Trachonia, Galinoporni

This series holds 76 photographs from the cemetery at Kountoura Trachonia, a wooded slope above the shore east of the fortress of Nitovikla in the Karpas peninsula. The expedition first noticed tombs cut into the rock face there. More than a dozen tombs dug into the ground had already been opened and looted. In 1929 Erik Sjöqvist excavated fourteen intact rock-cut tombs of the dromos type and one looted tomb. Coins in them dated the burials to the second half of the third century BC. The tombs were published in the first volume of the expedition's report.

The 22 field photographs show the excavation and the exterior of Tomb 2. The 54 object photographs show the finds by K.T. number (K.T.14.9 is Tomb 14, object 9), mainly pottery the captions class as Cypro-Hellenistic I. Four photographs belong to Trachonas, further along the coast, among them the relief above the entrance of the built tomb that Sjöqvist cleared in April 1928; the rest of the Trachonas material is in the Karpas series.

The find lists for Tombs 2–14 are in the field notebook DII:1e. See the excavation page and the tomb pages, for example Tomb 10.
