Edmond Torikian's photographs of ancient sites

37 photographs · 1900–99

Sites: Salamis, Kourion, Nea Paphos, Soli

Thirty-seven photographs by Edmond Torikian (1922–2006), a photographer and car engineer of Armenian descent and one of the founders of the Cyprus Photographic Society. His archive at CVAR covers Cyprus from the 1950s to the 1970s, when he left for Canada, where he taught photography at Humber College. Most are negatives, and most belong to the sub-collection CVAR calls "Cyprus Archaeological Sites and Historical Monuments".

At Salamis Torikian photographed the palaestra of the gymnasium on 15 May 1966, a Lions Club excursion to the site in about 1966, and a visitor, Dr Haig Mahdesian, in 1969; undated negatives show visitors among the columns of the palaestra. A series of colour negatives shows the sanctuary of Apollo Hylates at Kourion, and two undated photographs show the Roman sarcophagus in the cloister of Bellapais Abbey. Two more come from his general Cyprus series: a portrait taken on the floor mosaics of the House of Dionysus at Nea Paphos, and the marble Aphrodite of Soli in the Cyprus Museum.
