History

  1. January 1890
Wilhelm Dörpfeld, writing on DAI Athens notepaper, applied twice (25 and 27 Jan 1890) to Col. Warren for small excavations at Tamassos, Nea Paphos and Palaepaphos; both refused (multi-site permits not allowed under the Ottoman law still in force, and the Germans already held a permit for Dali). The Cyprus government treated the requests of the Berlin Museums and the DAI as separate matters.

  2. 1914–1966
Official German archaeological activity in Cyprus ceased with the First World War and resumed only in 1966 at Palaepaphos and 1970 at Tamassos, both led by the central office of the DAI in Berlin.

  3. 1966
First campaign of the German mission at Kouklia (Palaepaphos), sent under the auspices of the DAI and directed by F. G. Maier of the University of Konstanz (later Zurich): the Marcello hill siege works, the north-east gate, and a comprehensive study of ancient Paphos. Seasons continued each year (third 1968, fourth 1969, fifth 1970, sixth 1971) as the Swiss-German expedition.

  4. 1970
The DAI sent a mission under H.-G. Buchholz to Tamassos to re-study and publish the built tombs dug by Ohnefalsch-Richter in 1889 (unpublished despite his manuscript); first season 1970, second 1971 (Tomb IV dromos: bronze helmet, horse blinkers, lotus-decorated bronze plate; a warrior tomb compared with the Salamis royal tombs). The mission also found a sanctuary of Aphrodite (Archaic to Hellenistic).

  5. 1980–2008
The Palaepaphos mission continued as a Swiss-German expedition on behalf of the DAI under Maier of the University of Zurich, with Marie-Louise von Wartburg (Kouklia-Stavros sugar refinery) in its later phase; Maier is dated to the DAI 1966-2008.
