The Cypriot collection
The university Antikensammlung holds about 14 stone sculptures, 101 ceramics plus 75 fragments (Early Cypriot to Byzantine), 6 terracottas and smaller groups, listed in Recke's 2012 gazetteer; the Giessen collection was catalogued in 2010 as Kult-Tisch (Nys and Recke) (2012)
History
- 1885Ferdinand Duemmler, a Cyprus traveller of 1885 and later lecturer at Giessen, spent June to September in Cyprus; Max Ohnefalsch-Richter dug tombs for him. Schmid gives the Giessen lectureship; the date of the post is not stated.

- 1898–1909Bruno Sauer directed the Kunstwissenschaftliches Institut and the Kunst-, Muenzen- und Antikenkabinett at Giessen (GND note on the Wikidata record); in 1909 he moved to Kiel, and on an Egypt trip that year bought Cypriot pieces for Kiel and for himself.
- c. 1900The Giessen manufacturer Wilhelm Gail formed a collection that included several small Middle Bronze Age Cypriot vessels. Recke gives no link to the university; where it went is not stated.
- 1908Wilhelm Fabricius took his law doctorate at Giessen; Recke mentions this only to place the later owner of a large Cypriot limestone female head.
- 1970–1980Hans-Guenter Buchholz of Giessen directed annual campaigns at Tamassos (Politiko) for the German Archaeological Institute, to prepare Ohnefalsch-Richter's unpublished 'Tamassos und Idalion' by re-excavation and study of his finds of 1885, 1889 and 1894. The first campaign was at the end of summer 1970.

- 1976–1978The Department of Antiquities, Nicosia, gave the Giessen collection a donation (the 1978 date is in Recke's list; a 1976 'duplicates' gift to Bonn is a separate case).
- 2010Nys and Recke published 'Kult-Tisch. Kyprische Keramik im Kontext' (Giessen 2010), the publication named for the Giessen collection.
- 2010–2011Volume I of the final Tamassos excavation publication appeared in 2010 (necropoleis); after Buchholz's death in 2011 the series is edited by H. Matthaeus (Erlangen) and M. Recke (Giessen).

- 2011Giessen began teaching excavations at Hala Sultan Tekke under Matthias Recke, with the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Karin Nys), to publish a building complex found by Paul Aström in 1980. In 2012 Recke calls it the only German excavation in Cyprus then run.
