The project
At the northeast gate of the city wall at Kouklia, the Swiss-German mission excavated the Persian siege ramp of 498 BC, which yielded more than 1,000 fragments of votive offerings from a Late Archaic sanctuary outside the walls and more than 500 bronze and iron arrowheads and spear points1. The mission worked at Palaepaphos for 31 campaigns between 1966 and 1997, directed by Franz Georg Maier for the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut and, in turn, the Universität Konstanz and the University of Zurich2,3,4. Maier's book of 1984 puts the change from Konstanz to Zurich in 1972, with Konstanz until 1971; his guide of 2004 has Konstanz until 1972 and Zurich from 19731,4. Marie-Louise von Wartburg co-directed from 1980, and Hermary reports Maier's last research in the sanctuary in 2007–20085.
The gate and the siege ramp
The first campaign, in August 1966, set out to investigate the defences on Marchello hill and, by studying known material and reconnoitring the site, to clarify the topography and history of the ancient city2. The report dated the earliest excavated wall very probably to Cypro-Geometric I, and not to the end of the Late Bronze Age as had sometimes been supposed2. The same season exposed a limestone wall at Kaminia during levelling; the report states that bulldozer work had disturbed the stratigraphy there2.
The 1968 season uncovered the Persian-siege level of the early fifth century at the gate, and the 1969 season excavated the gate's inner bastion6,7. The reports attributed burning and destruction at the inner gate closure to the siege of 498 BC7. The 1971 season included bastion II and a fourth mine gallery, traced for 22 m; the weapons totalled 448 arrow and javelin points and 422 stone projectiles8.
Maier's guide to the site describes a ramp that filled the ditch and rose more than 7 m. Besides the votive fragments and arrowheads, it held a bronze helmet with fragments of an iron one1. Countermine tunnels undermined the ramp, and three bronze cauldrons were found still in situ1. Maier states that a revetment wall was added around the ramp in the fourth century BC, making it a horseshoe-shaped bastion in the defences1. The guide labels the helmet as in the Cyprus Museum and a Late Archaic female head from the votive group as in the Kouklia Museum1. Tunnel 1 of the countermines is still accessible to visitors; most of the ramp was removed in excavation, and its shape is reconstructed behind a modern retaining wall1. In 1994 and 1996 exploratory work on sections of the Marchello city wall checked its building phases and chronology9.
Wells and tombs
Survey in 1967 found deep wells at Evreti and, at Lakkos tou Skarnou, a previously unknown Geometric-Archaic necropolis, found through clandestine excavations10. Wells III and VIII, dug in 1968, held Late Bronze Age material: Mycenaean IIIC:1 pottery, ivory debris, bronze objects, seals, spindle whorls, millstones, pithos fragments and animal bones6,11. The report interpreted at least part of the assemblage as coming from a Mycenaean habitation quarter not yet located6. Georgiou dates the White Painted Wheelmade III vessels from the wells to the end of Late Cypriot IIC and Late Cypriot IIIA12.
At Lakkos tou Skarnou the mission cleared tombs that the report records as looted, and recorded Geometric and Archaic pottery, including Proto-White Painted. The intact tomb T1.K IV held a child burial in a niche, with a White Painted VII amphora6. At Kaminia the mission recorded the partly destroyed Late Cypriot chamber tomb TK 1, two chambers of which were intact10.
In 1983 a new project began to explore part of the inhabited city systematically, in the habitation and craft quarters13. The 1984 campaign found a Classical public building at least 25 x 25 m on the Evreti plateau, with a probable colonnaded court, and the reports place the abandonment of the investigated area around 300 BC14.
The Sanctuary of Aphrodite
In 1970 the team made soundings at the Aphrodite temple site beside the trenches of 188815. When sanctuary work began in 1973, Maier wrote, no full-scale investigation was planned: a single short campaign was meant to show that nothing more could be got from a site dug in 1888, and it grew into a major undertaking16. The 1973 report dated Sanctuary II to the Roman period, as a reconstruction reusing elements of a Late Bronze Age Sanctuary I17. The 1976 report placed the Roman building after the earthquake of AD 7718.
The 1975 campaign confirmed Sanctuary I, dated about 1200 BC on two pillar capitals, and reported a horn of consecration, a clay bathtub and a pithos in situ19. In 1976 more than 500 fragments of terracotta statuettes came from the sanctuary and a bothros18. Medieval sugar-refinery deposits overlay the area, and in 1977 the refinery was shown to extend to the south limit of the temenos20. Work in 1979 completed the western part of the north enclosure of Sanctuary II21.
Maier reports that three further sanctuary campaigns, in 1993, 1994 and 1995, completed the investigation of the site9,16. The team worked on the plan of the Roman sanctuary and recorded mosaics, displaced votive material, a paved road, a drain and later water pipes9. Maier's guide states that the excavation established continuity of cult for more than 1,600 years, from about 1200 BC to the end of the fourth century AD1.
The sugar refinery and the royal tomb
In 1980 the project began excavating the late medieval sugar mills at Kouklia-Stavros, with von Wartburg as co-director5,22. The finds included mill-stones, more than 3,800 sugar moulds and 1,700 jars23,24. The complex had milling, refining, stoking and storage sections, and the assemblage comprised around 12,000 moulds and 4,400 jars1,9. The original complex was built towards the end of the 13th century AD, remodelled in the 14th and early 15th, and operated into the Venetian period9.
In 1990–1991 the mission investigated the rock-cut royal tomb known as Spilaion tis Regainas at Arkalon9. Maier identified it as the burial place of the Paphian kings Timocharis and Echetimos from inscriptions found in the tomb and since removed, and dated it to the mid-fourth century BC25. Re-investigation in 1991–92 gave few Late Classical finds and 281 Roman lamps from the tomb's reuse1.
The preliminary reports appeared in the Report of the Department of Antiquities, Cyprus and in Archäologischer Anzeiger, and the finals in the series Ausgrabungen in Alt-Paphos auf Cypern26,27. Volume 1 (1977) covers the weapons and small finds from the northeast gate and ramp, volume 6 (2008) the excavation record of the gate and ramp, volume 7 (2011) the votive terracottas and sculpture from the sanctuary, and volume 9 (2019) the sculpture and building parts from the ramp28,29,30,31. The 18th preliminary report, by von Wartburg in 2019, covers the sanctuary campaigns of 2007–200832.

Seasons
26 seasons- 1966August 1966
First campaign: re-examined the oldest city wall (mud-brick on stone foundation) and dated it to Cypro-Geometric I rather than the Late Bronze Age; north-east gate shown to have been rebuilt several times, with Hellenistic guardrooms, so the wall was kept in use after Nea Paphos. During levelling in August 1966 the foundations of a limestone wall about 30 m long and 1.6 m thick appeared; probably part of the city fortifications; Attic stamped pottery in the wall gives a 4th c. BC terminus post quem; bulldozer damage to stratigraphy. Surface survey of the south-east city sector showed continuous settlement from the 12th century BC to the 14th century AD; Roman architectural fragments collected in the modern village.
Directed by F. G. Maier[5]
- 1967September-October 1967
Siege mound against the rampart (arrowheads, inscriptions), second bastion of the north-east gate, guardroom ovens; new walls at Kaminia and a Late Cypriot chamber tomb TK 1 with Myc. IIIC:1 bowl; survey: cisterns at Evreti with datable Classical-Hellenistic pottery, looted Archaic cemetery at Lakkos tou Skarnou.
Directed by F. G. Maier[20]
- 1968September-October 1968
Five looted tombs cleared in a Geometric-Archaic necropole (11th-6th c.), with Cypro-Geometric and Cypro-Archaic pottery including Proto-White Painted; one intact tomb with a child burial in a niche dated mid-6th c. by a White Painted VII amphora. At least four deep wells; well I filled with Attic imports and local 5th-c. pottery; wells III and VIII held Late Bronze Age material (Myc IIIB to IIIC:1b bell cups, Rude Style, fine ivory, bronze, spindle whorls, seals), probably from a nearby Mycenaean habitation, close to Mantissa and Maa. Further section of the Persian siege mound of 498 BC cleared (altar and architectural fragments, arrowheads, weapons, a hand of a limestone statue); the north-east gate level of the siege cleared, median bastion nearly fully exposed, three guard rooms dated before 300 BC, a later Roman road with water channel.
Directed by F. G. Maier[21]
- 1969September-October 1969
Fourth season: the remaining siege mound of 498 BC cleared (300+ finds of stelai, altars, inscriptions, many iron and bronze arrowheads); NE gate bastion fully excavated and its burning in 498 shown; rescue pits at Kaminia and Mantissa; study of Evreti wells with 290+ Mycenaean IIIB bowls, ivory pyxis lid and stylets.
Directed by F. G. Maier[22]
- 1970June-July 1970
Soundings beside the 1888 temple trenches found no trace of the sanctuary, only Turkish and modern debris; a small 16th-century church over Roman houses with Late Sgraffito graves; stratigraphy showed no sure Mycenaean habitation here; fortification dig on Marcello hill postponed.
Directed by F. G. Maier[23]
- 1971June-July 1971
Two further Geometric and Archaic tombs, disturbed by farm-road works, with several burials each and many White Painted IV, Bichrome IV and Black-on-Red IV vessels. Last of the 498 BC siege ramp cleared: 448 arrow and javelin points (153 bronze, 295 iron), 422 stone projectiles, and votive pieces from the wrecked sanctuary (16 kouroi, 21 sphinxes and lions, 158 stelae); bastion II of the gate; a fourth mine gallery 22 m long; LC and LH IIIC1 sherds; a burial c. 1200 BC.
Directed by F.-G. Maier[25]
- 1972August-September 1972
Season mostly spent studying 1966–71 finds: late Classical pottery from wells at Evreti-Kaminia, an ivory workshop assemblage and animal bones from LC wells at Evreti. Also rescue work at Vathyrkakas (after 17 tombs were looted, further Chalcolithic tombs; steatite pendants), and soundings at the Alonia site on a mosaic of Leda and the Swan (3rd century AD) with triclinium and baths.
Directed by F. G. Maier[26]
- 1973August - September 1973
Eighth campaign: check soundings on the fortifications confirmed a mid-4th century BC rebuild, with an altar foundation; new systematic exploration of the Aphrodite sanctuary showed a Roman Sanctuary II and an earlier Sanctuary I dated to the 12th century BC, with medieval sugar refinery remains and first Chalcolithic sherds at Kouklia.
Directed by F. G. Maier[27]
- 1975August-September 1975
Ninth campaign: medieval sugar-refinery remains over the sanctuary (about 800 molasses pots); Late Bronze Age Sanctuary I (c. 1200 BC) confirmed by pillar capitals and a horn of consecration, a clay bathtub, and the largest in situ pithos from Cyprus with cylinder-seal frieze, with 22 shrews, 50 mice and a fox; Roman Sanctuary II north part, new inscriptions, a northern precinct with later mosaic.
Directed by F. G. Maier[28]
- 1976August-September 1976
Tenth campaign continuing study of Sanctuary I (Late Bronze, c. 1200 BC) and Roman Sanctuary II: medieval sugar-refinery waste (over 1000 molasses pots, a potter's kiln); LB pier and capital fragments; rock cuttings under the sanctuary; a second pithos in situ under the Roman south stoa; south stoa of Sanctuary II completed; over 500 terracotta statuette fragments of Archaic to Hellenistic date from the site and a bothros.
Directed by F. G. Maier[29]
- 1977August-September 1977
Mainly study season; minor digging in Sanctuary I showed the medieval sugar refinery reached the temenos south edge (200+ molasses pots, 12th-century glazed ware); survey of sugar installations; LC offering table in situ; Chalcolithic axe and Red-on-White below; terracotta fragments from bothroi.
Directed by F. G. Maier[30]
- 1978April-May 1978
Sanctuary I (Late Bronze Age) finished: only medieval sugar-mill rock basins and levelled ground remained; site KC between the sanctuary and the Roman peristyle house yielded a rich medieval layer (Late Sgraffito, Zeuxippus and Syrian wares, molasses pots) and c. 1700 identifiable Archaic-Classical votive terracotta figurine fragments; medieval sugar mill reconstructed (molasses boiling furnaces, aqueduct); new sugar works probed at Kolossi, Episkopi and Lemba.
