Biography
Count Emanuel Ludolf (1823-1898) made 46 Cypriot objects available to Vienna between 1873 and 1883. The Kunsthistorisches Museum's 1999 catalogue calls him "the well-known collector" who "served as a diplomat in the Orient" and describes the group as primarily pottery and terracotta statues1. Part came to the Österreichisches Museum für Kunst und Industrie by purchase in 1873, and part to the imperial Antikensammlung as gifts in 1879 and 18831.
The catalogue entries for his pieces include a White Painted flask given in 18831, Base-Ring and Proto-White Painted vessels11, a Base-Ring female idol1 and a Cypro-Archaic II kore1, all given in 1879, and a limestone head of a young man sold in 1873 and taken over by the Antikensammlung in 19401. Each is entered as from Cyprus without further detail, and the catalogue does not say how he acquired them. A Wikidata entry for a diplomat of the same name and dates gives his birth in Linz on 3 October 1823 and his death in Vercelli on 17 May 18982.
