The project
In 1802 Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall, secretary to Sir William Sidney Smith, visited Palaipaphos while HMS Tigre lay at Katopaphos1,2. He described the temenos wall, damaged architectural pieces, inscriptions and mosaic fragments, and published a sketch plan; Maier calls him the first scholarly traveller to describe the ruins in some detail2. At the Spilaion tis Regainas he copied and published an inscription, and his visit is the earliest record of the tomb2. Smith supplied the ship's large boat and a crew with picks and pointed tools; in Hammer's account Bromley hacked at the mosaic and broke it, and next morning two large mosaic pieces and two inscribed stones were brought aboard2. Maier reports the smaller, red-marble stone (Topographische Ansichten no. 49) in the Imperial Antiquities Cabinet in Vienna; Smith gave away the larger (no. 50), and its recipient is not named2.
