Palaepaphos Archaeological Atlas Project (GIS and geophysical survey)
2002–2003 · Palaepaphos
Also known as Palaepaphos Digital Atlas
The Palaepaphos Digital Atlas of 2002–2003, a GIS and geophysical project whose 2003 survey covered 44,178 square metres and, in Iacovou's account, made the assumed city-wall circuit suspect.
The project
The Palaepaphos Digital Atlas, run in 2002–2003 by Vasiliki Kassianidou, George Papasavvas and Maria Iacovou with Apostolos Sarris of FORTH, combined a GIS with geophysical survey1,2. The University of Cyprus Archaeological Research Unit sponsored it, with the Department of Lands and Surveys and Geo-Imaging as partners2. It was designed primarily as a heritage-management tool and produced a digital land-relief model of the Kouklia-Palaepaphos municipal area1. The 2003 survey at Palaepaphos used magnetic prospection and electrical soil resistance and covered 44,178 square metres1. It tested the assumption that the city was enclosed by a wall; Iacovou reports that it made the assumed circuit suspect, and that without it the project would have kept conceiving of the urban centre as walled1.
